Scholarship Junkies - Resources

A New Beginning

College is hard, paying for it doesn't have to be.

What we do at Scholarship Junkies is provide access to information, resources, and opportunities to provide individuals with a set of tools. With these tools, individuals can begin their trek towards providing for their higher educational needs. With these tools, youth are equipped to express their experiences in the form of stories.

Over the past three years we've reviewed almost 2 million words, nearly 4,000 essays, and have helped students win over $5,000,000 in scholarships. And we spent less than$3,000 to do it.

Read our story, and take a look at the new Scholarship Junkies!

Auburn Updates

I have several updates that I wanted to share with you in case it’s beneficial to any of your students.

As a part of the on campus housing application; student can list one roommate. We just found out that housing will be using the earliest date between roommate’s housing applications. In the years past they have used the latest date between the two students.

College of Agriculture:
Some of your students could have received an invitation to the College of Agriculture’s minority event scheduled for December 2nd. I have attached the forms to this email, and the deadline to signup is November 20th (this Friday). Sounds like a great event, and they are awarding a $1,000 scholarship at the end of the event!

College of Veterinary Medicine:
The College of Veterinary Medicine has an open house scheduled for April 16th. The website does not have additional information posted yet, but questions can be directed to 334/844-2497.

As you know; decisions have been very competitive this year. If you have a student who was deferred in November (their status says, “file still under review”), please have them reach out to me so that I can assist with their application. If they were deferred, please remind them that the reviewing committee wants to see something new in their file before the next round. We have decisions on December 15th, and on February 15th.

If you have a student with a 34 ACT or above, they MUST fill out our one scholarship application called AUSOM by December 1st in order to be eligible for the Plainsman Prestigious Scholarships. February 10th is still the deadline for all academic, departmental, and general scholarships.

Greetings from Jefferson State Community College,

We are excited about the upcoming Spring 2016 semester for our Dual Enrollment students.  In preparation for Spring 2016, we wanted to make sure that you had all the information that you need to get your students admitted and enrolled.  There have been a few updates to our policies, see the list below.

Policy Updates

·        Continuing students will still need to complete a new signature page (see attached) for the Spring 2016 semester and provide an updated high school transcript if GPA is recalculated from Fall to Spring.
·        Test scores, such as ACT or our COMPASS placement, are required for ALL 12th grade Dual Enrollment students.
·        Students in 10th and 11th grade are only required to submit test scores if they are taking a course that requires placement, such as English or math (see attached checklist).
·        Online applications are preferred.

Attached is a checklist that provides additional information on what is required for Dual Enrollment admissions.  Please note that we need class rosters from the high school to register the students for their Dual Enrollment courses.

Spring 2016 courses begin on January 6, 2016, and we would like to have all students registered and paid for their Dual Enrollment courses prior to this date.  Please return all required documents to us as soon as possible, Monday, December 21, 2015 at the latest.  We are happy to assist with document collection and can come by to visit your high school.  Please provide advance notice to allow for scheduling.

Please feel free to call me with any questions!   - Mrs. Cochran (280-2822)

Scholarship Junkies - Scholarship Bank

The Scholarship Bank

Scholarships Exclusively for our Students!

Here at Scholarship Junkies we are excited to introduce a new program, called the Scholarship Bank. Our team members are collecting and sorting through tons of scholarships to create a master list to send out to you once a month.

You can find the link to our bank here. All of the scholarships are sorted by category and their due date, and list all qualifications necessary to apply. Several scholarships have due dates very soon, so take some time during this Thanksgiving break and see if there are any you should apply for while you have time off school. Don't see many you qualify for? We are still building our bank, so watch for the coming weeks as we add more resources.

After using our bank, if you have any feedback you would like to give us, we would greatly appreciate it! We will read every response and implement your suggestions going forward.

Alabama Auburn Sock/Coloring Book Drive to benefit local groups

Starting Friday, the Be There Club will be sponsoring a Sock Drive (to benefit Son Light) and Coloring Books and /or Crayons Drive (to benefit Project Fresh Start).  There are 2 ways that you can help these organizations...

1.  Donate socks (unused) on behalf of Alabama or Coloring Books/Crayons for Auburn.  Bins will be available in the main office and at the game Friday.  Each item counts towards the total counts for Alabama/Auburn.  (example PAIR of socks or box of crayons)

2.  Purchase an Alabama or Auburn football cutout for $1 that will be posted in the entryway of VHS.  All money from these footballs will go to these two organizations listed above for their outreach programs.  You can write your name and team on the football if you like...   :)

The fun part:
Mrs. White will represent Alabama and Mr. Mann will represent Auburn.  The team representative with the most footballs will PIE the other in the face!  More details soon.

The drive will ONLY last until Thanksgiving break.  Please help us with this worthwhile cause!

Scholarship Opportunities for Black Students

2015 Scholarships Available For Black Students
Black Student Graduating CollegeEvery year, more than $50 billion dollars in scholarships are given away to students of all ethnic backgrounds. This number includes many awards that are given only to African American students and other minorities.
Such opportunities are needed because African Americans continue to show the greatest need in the area of financial assistance. Even more, the education gap between minority students and their white counterparts is still very wide.
This web site was designed to help African American students find the latest scholarships and grants that are being given away by non-profit organizations, government agencies and major corporations.
Most of these programs aim to assist disadvantaged people who come from poor families and can not afford to pay for college. However, there are also programs that recognize and award students who can demonstrate excellence in education, sports, community service, etc. regardless of their financial status.
Most scholarships can be renewed for multiple years, and do not have to be repaid as long all of the agreed-upon terms are being met. Even more, scholarships can typically be used for, not just tuition, but also to pay for rooming, books, and other college needs!
